His concept of New Work has been passionately discussed ever since. As a thought leader, he initiated a global movement throughout the last decades. With his New Work approach, Bergmann challenged workers to determine what they wanted to do with their future work life if automation took away their jobs. When the Austro-American philosopher Bergmann first created the New Work concept, he applied it to the US automobile crisis. Short-time work and profound changes in our economies have diminished the number of traditional wage labor jobs. The global shift to remote work has revealed to millions of people that the traditional way of organizing work around presence and control is no longer necessary. “New Work helps people to finally address the question of what they really, really want.” It reflects the future of work, in which we don’t just undergo development, but courageously take on some risk and actively seek development. or, in the words of the old Austro-American philosopher and founder of the New Work concept, Frithjof Bergmann: If you really know what you want, work doesn’t hurt and make you dissatisfied.
